A private browser that works from the first page

Most browsers can be made private if you dig through the settings. Luma is private as soon as you install it, and stays fast and familiar because it runs on Chromium.

What “private” means in Luma

Trackers, ads and third-party cookies are blocked before a page loads them, with the EasyList and EasyPrivacy lists (more than 140,000 rules). Scripts inside embedded frames can’t read or set cookies either.

Luma tries the secure HTTPS version of every site first and warns you before falling back to plain HTTP. It limits the details sites can use to fingerprint your device, and it sends Global Privacy Control, the signal that asks sites not to sell your data.

Your data stays on your computer

There is no Luma account and no telemetry: Luma doesn’t send what you browse anywhere. History, bookmarks, settings and the privacy statistics are kept on your computer, and passwords are encrypted with Windows’ own protection.

If you turn on sync, it goes to a folder or a WebDAV server that you choose, encrypted before it leaves the computer. Never to a server of ours.

Safe from dangerous sites

Luma warns you before you open a known phishing or malware site. The check happens on your computer against lists that update by themselves, so the addresses you visit are never sent anywhere to be checked.

Private without giving anything up

Luma is built on Chromium, the engine of Chrome, Edge and Brave, so sites work as you expect and your extensions come straight from the Chrome Web Store. If a site doesn’t work with the protections on, you can turn them off for that site only.

Frequently asked questions

Is Luma free?
Yes. Luma is free, with no account and no ads.
Is Luma more private than Chrome?
Out of the box, yes: Luma blocks trackers, ads and third-party cookies from the first page, sends no telemetry and needs no account. Chrome does none of this by default.
Does a private browser slow sites down?
Usually the opposite: blocking trackers and ads means pages load less, so they often open faster.
Which systems does Luma run on?
Windows 10 and 11, and Android 10 or later. macOS, Linux and iOS are in development.
